I try to walk every day. It has not been easy since I moved away from my 5:30am walking partner, but I'm getting back into it. I walk a mile to the Borders book store and have coffee or ice tea and walk back. I'm getting faster.
Walking at 5:30am put me in touch with the phases of the moon in the mornings, the seasonal change in light and daylight savings time. The early morning wakings of birds, particularly the crows that roosted in trees along our walk. Over the years the traffic on the freeway we walked over increased from one or two cars to heavy traffic at 6am.
Now I'm getting in touch with how warm it is at 3pm. And there are birds beside the little pond in the park. Today I saw a Blue Heron standing knee deep at the edge of the water. There are Canadian Geese with their families. They are a few months older than the Norfolk golf course geese. (Sue, I don't have to chase that little white ball or carry clubs.) I do however have a little back pack for writing and reading materials.
When school is out for the summer my walk will change again. I will get up and walk in the mornings--not 5:30-- but before the sun gets too high in the sky.
I'll keep you posted regarding the birds.

Whoa -- Bob would be jealous about the Heron.
Cool. I see a heron at least once a day - flying over our place or over the Elkhoen just west of where I work. They always look so stately and dignified. I've been trying to capture one on film, but they fly way faster than I can get focussed.
Thanks for the new post!
Do you ever walk near the river where the whales are stranded?
Sue
I haven't been there since the big Sacramento Whale festival started this week. So I've only been seeing them on TV.
I think the local ABC web site is news10.org If you want to see loocal coverage.
